Genotypic Characterization of Cryptosporidium in HIV-Infected Patients in Thailand

چکیده
Cryptosporidium is an intestinal protozoan parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis. It also has been recognized as an important opportunistic pathogen affecting HIV-infected patients. It has been associated with chronic diarrhea, decreased quality of life, and shortened survival in HIV-infected patients. The prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in HIV-infected patients is 5-50%. However, in Thailand information about the prevalence of each genotype and subgenotype/subtype of Cryptosporidium in HIV-infected patients is less available. In this study, genotypic characterization of Cryptosporidium isolated from HIV-infected patients in Thailand was investigated using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of 18 SSU rRNA genes. The fecal samples were collected during the period from 1999 to 2004. Among 110 Cryptosporidium isolates, five genotypes were identified which are C. hominis (36.4%), C. parvum (10%), C. meleagridis (19.1%), C. felis (16.4%) and C. canis (16.4%). These data indicate that extensive genotypic diversity among Cryptosporidium was observed among Cryptosporidium isolates and C. hominis is the predominant genotype in HIV-infected patients in Thailand. *Corresponding author. Genotypic identification of Cryptosporidium spp. isolated from HIV-infected patients and immunocompetent children of São Paulo, Brazil.
Cryptosporidium isolates identified in fourteen stool samples, collected from five HIV-infected patients and nine immunocompetent children, living in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were submitted to a molecular analysis using a nested PCR followed of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), for genetic characterization. The analysis was based on digestion with RsaI restriction enzyme o...
متن کاملMolecular analysis of Cryptosporidium species isolated from HIV-infected patients in Thailand.
Cryptosporidium isolates from diarrhoeal stools of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients in Thailand were genetically analysed by sequencing the variable region in the 18S rRNA gene. Twenty-nine isolates from four children and 25 adults attending King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok during 1996 and 2000 were analysed. All patients suffered from chronic watery diarrhoea...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of Cryptosporidium isolates obtained from humans in France.
Cryptosporidium parvum is usually considered the agent of human cryptosporidiosis. However, only in the last few years, molecular biology-based methods have allowed the identification of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes, and only a few data are available from France. In the present work, we collected samples of whole feces from 57 patients from France (11 immunocompetent patients, 35 human...
متن کاملPrevalence and genetic characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. and Cystoisospora belli in HIV-infected patients.
Cryptosporidium spp. and Cystoisospora belli are monoxenic protozoa that have been recognized as the causative agents of chronic diarrhea in immunocompromised individuals, especially HIV-infected subjects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of these intestinal protozoa in HIV-positive patients in the Triângulo Mineiro region of Brazil and to correlate the presence of thes...
متن کاملIntestinal parasitic infections in Thai HIV-infected patients with different immunity status
BACKGROUND One of the major health problems among HIV seropositive patients is superimposed infection due to the defect of immunity. Furthermore, intestinal parasite infection, which is also one of the basic health problems in tropical region, is common in these patients. In this study, a cross sectional study to document the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection in Thai HIV-infected pat...
